InUrSkn is more than just a skin a hair and body clinic. It is Dr. Sejal's promise of providing minimal intervention patient care which is holistic, personalized and humane.
Excimer Laser is a type of laser that emits a UVB light beam of 308 nm. This light beam when focused in short bursts on areas of skin affected by chronic conditions like vitiligo, eczema and psoriasis tends to revive the skin. The fact that the beam is a focused beam makes it suitable for small and mid sized lesions and also ensures that the surrounding area is left unaffected during treatment.
308 nm Excimer laser treatment is useful for treating a wide variety of skin cancers as listed below:
1. Psoriasis
2. Vitiligo
3. Eczema
4. Hypopigmentation disorders
5. Alopecia areata
6. Atopic dermatitis
Exposure to 308 nm UVB rays in short bursts, tends to irradiate the skin being treated and modulates the immune system response of the cells in the exposed region.
It also causes migration and proliferation of melanocytes. These are the cells responsible for pigmentation.
Hence when the excimer laser is used on vitiligo patches there is a repigmentation of the skin observed while when it is used on psoriasis plaques or eczema patches the breakdown of the harmful immune system response allows the skin cells to begin functioning normally and the skin tends to return back to its normal functioning.
Patients are advised to undergo excimer laser treatment at least twice a week for a minimum of 10 weeks. Sometimes upto 20 weeks of treatment are needed to see satisfying results.
The following steps are followed in excimer laser treatment:
1. The area to be treated is cleansed.
2. Dr. Sejal identifies the correct setting for the intensity and duration of the laser.
3. Then the laser shots are fired on the treatment area.
4. This causes a minor inflammation and redness in the treated area.
5. The final step is to apply a anti-inflammatory cream.
Excimer laser treatment is carried out in conjunction with oral and topical medications for the specific condition.
There is a very high rate of satisfaction with this treatment for mild and moderate cases of vitiligo, psoriasis etc.
In cases of vitiligo there is a very high number of patients who report more than 75% repigmentation after treatment with excimer laser.
In cases of Psoriasis, most patients achieve a PASI-75 score after 10 to 12 weeks.
Also a high number of patients of mild and moderate psoriasis have reported a 100% resolution of their patches after treatment with excimer laser.
Most patients of excimer laser treatment do not report any side effects. There may be mild redness and swelling immediately after the treatment, but the same subsides after 1 to 2 hours. In some cases there may be blistering or hyper pigmentation, but these effects are also short lived and the same subsides in a week or so.

Excimer laser works by exposing your skin to UVB rays of a single wavelength, that is 308 nm. Also only the lesions and patches being treated are exposed to the laser. Hence there is no chance of developing cancer or any other ailment.
The excimer laser treatment can clear out the patches or lesions on which the treatment is done. But because of the chronic condition of disorders like psoriasis, vitiligo etc. there may be recurrence or generation of new patches and in which case the excimer treatment has to be carried out again on these new patches.
There is no degradation in condition if the treatments are stopped.
For most chronic conditions the treatment protocol mandated is 2 times a week for 10 to 20 weeks. During this duration the intensity of the laser is increased as the treated area is able to tolerate higher exposure.
No. This treatment has no down time and the patient can resume his routine activities immediately.
This treatment is safe for most patients suffering from these conditions. Certain groups of patients like lactating mothers and gestating women may not be suitable for this treatment.
