Dermal fillers and medical threads are popularly used for the treatment of aging-related concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss. However, they have also been found to be effective in the treatment of depressed scars such as boxcar and rolling scars. These scars can be caused by a variety of factors such as acne, injury, or surgery, and can significantly impact one’s confidence and self-esteem.
The filler material used in the treatment of scars is usually made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found in the body and helps to retain moisture in the skin. When injected into the scar tissue, dermal fillers can help to fill in the depressed areas and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
Medical threads, on the other hand, are a minimally invasive treatment for depressed scars that involves the use of special sutures made of absorbable materials such as polydioxanone (PDO). These threads are inserted into the skin using a small needle and are then gently pulled to lift the depressed area and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The threads are eventually absorbed by the body, leaving behind a natural-looking improvement in the appearance of the scar.
These treatments are used as a part of a larger protocol for depressed scar treatment. Generally the normal protocol for scar treatment is as below:
It is only after carrying out these procedures that dermal fillers and threads are considered for scar treatment.
This treatment is only suitable for depressed scars. These scars may take different types of shapes like ice pick scars, box car scars and rolling scars because, but these treatments can help with resolution of these types of scars.
However scars like hypertrophic scars, contracture scars, keloidal scars and flat scars do not benefit from this treatment.
Dermal fillers and medical threads are used for treating depressed scars by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen and elastin are proteins that are responsible for the skin’s elasticity and strength. When a scar is depressed, it means that the skin is lacking in these proteins, which results in a sunken appearance.
Dermal fillers work by injecting a hyaluronic acid-based substance into the depressed scar, which then plumps up the skin and makes it more even with the surrounding area. Medical threads, on the other hand, work by creating a scaffolding effect within the skin, which then encourages the growth of new collagen and elastin fibers. Over time, this results in a reduction of the scar’s appearance and a smoother, more even skin texture.
Both Threads and Fillers dissolve in the skin after 6 to 12 months of time. But as they dissolve they also boost collagen synthesis which replaces these. Over multiple treatments as adequate collagen and elastin structures are formed the results become more visible and also permanent.
However please note that any new scars generated because of acne outbreaks or other reasons may need a different round of treatment again.
In both the procedures the objective is to raise the depression with the aid of the substitute material and also help with collagen synthesis. the steps followed are generally as below:
1. Cleaning of the treatment area.
2. Application of a local topical anesthetic cream.
3. Loosening and cutting of the underlying scar tissue
4. Injecting or placing the filler of thread respectively
5. FInal cleaning and application of topical anti-inflammatory cream
Both the procedures carry limited risk as the treatments are localized and done in the upper layers of the skin. However being minimally invasive in nature there are associated risks like bruising, inflammation, infection etc. But most of the adverse reactions are limited and heal by themself or with minimum intervention.
